    About these numbers

    What each milestone means

Each milestone is an animal’s estimated maximum lifespan: the oldest age credibly recorded or estimated for that species. It isn’t a typical lifespan. Most individuals live far shorter lives, and records can be broken, so older individuals may exist.

    How the figures are compared

Every figure follows the same rule: the longest credibly documented age for the species, from either the wild or captivity, as listed in the AnAge database. The one exception is a record that has since grown: when the same documented individual has been confirmed alive at an older age, the newer figure is used and linked. Anecdotal claims are mentioned in an animal’s notes but not used.

Each animal is labelled In captivity, In the wild or Setting not specified. Captive animals are protected from predators and harsh conditions, so their records are often higher than anything seen in the wild. Many of the longest figures for wild animals are scientific estimates (from growth rings, eye-lens chemistry or radiocarbon dating) rather than known birth dates, and they can be uncertain by decades.

    About the count

“Passed” counts only the 98 animals included in this visualizer. It says nothing about all animals, and it doesn’t mean no living animal of that kind is older than you.

    About the countdown

The countdown is approximate. It uses your age in years and months, not your exact birthday, so it may be off by about a month. Your age never leaves your browser.
